Wound Healing Mechanism

Agar, an active ingredient in SeraSeal, is a linear complex sugar made from beta-galactopyranose linked to 3,6-anhydro-L-galactopyranose.   This sugar will cross-link with the ions of platelet phospholipids and cations from amine groups in fibrinogen/fibrin monomers and tissue proteins, forming an "-1,6-linked galactophospho and "-1,6-galactoamine bond, aggregating the platelets.  The aggregation of platelets causes a change in the membrane surface, releasing 5 growth factors: platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), vascular-endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), insulin-like growth factor (IGF), and epidermal growth factor (EGF), into the wound site, thereby, promoting wound healing. 

The remaining active agents in SeraSeal, serine proteases:  FII, FVII, FIX and FX, catalyzes the normal coagulation cascade system to form a fibrin clot without creating an inflammatory process.  As a result, C-reactive protein (CRP) production is limited, allowing elevated levels of interlukin-10 (IL-10) at the wound site, thus inhibiting fibrosis.
